Welcome to UNCHAINED ELEPHANTS – a community of compassionate animal lovers and travelers committed to making a positive impact on elephant welfare in Thailand. Since our rebranding in 2023, we have successfully rescued three elephants, Kanoon, Kham Phaeng and Mongkoln, providing them with a new life free from exploitation. We believe in creating lasting change through education, focusing on three key pillars:
1. Educating Travelers
2. Establishing an Education Center
3. Rescuing Elephants in Need
Our initiatives are further strengthened by an NFT project, integrating technology to support our commitment to elephant welfare and community engagement. Join us in our multifaceted efforts to create positive and lasting change for elephants.

On September 5th, we accomplished our first elephant rescue mission, unchaining Kanoon, a male elephant who had endured four years of captivity next to a garbage dump and had lost one eye in Chiang Mai. This rescue mission was groundbreaking because Kanoon became the world’s first tokenized elephant, paving the way for more to follow. We launched the project with a dual fundraising approach, combining the utilization of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) with crowdfunding. This effort, which combined 40% of thefunds from digital membership (NFTs) and 60% from crowdfunding, amounted to an impressive $19,495 USD (662,852 baht). This achievement not only secured Kanoon’s freedom but also validated the effectiveness of our business model.
ELEPHANT
Unfortunately, Kanoon passed away on the 12th of November 2023, as we were too late to rescue him. However, in his remaining days away from the horrendous garbage dump, he had the opportunity to enjoy simple joys such as playing in the mud, regaining his elephant instincts, and socializing with other elephants. Rest in peace, Kanoon – you will forever be our guiding light, pushing us forward.

RESCUE KHAM PHAENG
On December 12, 2023, together with our supporters, we achieved another milestone – successfully rescuing our second elephant, marking a significant step in our commitment to elephant welfare. This rescue mission kickstarted on November 3rd, with unwavering support from our dedicated community and Somboon Legacy Foundation. Kham Phaeng, found chained both front and back legs, emaciated, almost toothless, and struggling with feet issues, became a poignant symbol of the plight faced by elephants in exploitative environments. Today, Kham Phaeng is not only free from the cruel bonds of chaining, starvation, and health issues but is also adjusting to her newfound life of freedom at Somboon Legacy Foundation in Kanchanaburi.

MONGKOLN, A YOUNG BULL ELEPHANT WHO UNITED HEARTS & ORGANIZATIONS. A PIVOTAL CHANGE NEEDED FOR POSITIVE IMPACT ON ELEPHANT WELFARE.
On May 31st and June 1st, we accomplished our third elephant rescue mission, this time for a young bull elephant named Mongkoln. Born into captivity and subjected to a life of hardship and exploitation, Mongkoln’s story symbolizes the ongoing struggle faced by many captive elephants. With the dedicated efforts of our team and the support of our partners and donors, including six organizations united for this cause, we successfully secured Mongkoln’s freedom and initiated his relocation to a Following Giants in Krabi. This rescue mission not only marked a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to elephant welfare but also served as a beacon of hope for the broader cause of ethical treatment and conservation of elephants worldwide. In the future, our goal is to shine a spotlight on Mongkoln’s story to educate, inspire positive change, and advocate for the improvement of elephant welfare worldwide.
RESCUE STORIES
We are confident that Mongkoln’s story will serve as a global inspiration for advocating elephant welfare. Together with our previous rescues, it will be featured in the pilot episode of our docuseries for Unchained Elephants. Our aim is to highlight how tourists’ choices impact the elephant tourism industry and to pitch this episode to major distributors like Netflix, sparking a worldwide conversation on ethical treatment and promoting sustainable tourism practices.
